What is body doubling?

Body doubling means working while another person is present. You keep ownership of your task; the shared environment makes it easier to begin and stay with it.

How body doubling works

A body double does not complete the task for you or supervise every step. Their presence creates a simple social cue: this is the time and place where both people are working.

Online sessions make that cue available without travel. Participants briefly state an intention, work quietly, and return for a check-in at the end.

  • Choose one concrete task
  • Say what you intend to finish
  • Work in a visible shared room
  • Check in when the focus block ends

Why shared presence can reduce friction

Many difficult tasks are not difficult because of skill. The friction is often starting, returning after distraction, or deciding what to do next. A predictable session removes some of those decisions.

Body doubling is a productivity practice, not medical treatment. Different people respond differently, so the useful test is whether it makes your next work block easier to enter and complete.

Ways to use body doubling

Use it for studying, administration, creative work, job searching, household planning, or any task that benefits from a clear start and finish.

  • Scheduled group sessions for a fixed commitment
  • Always-open rooms when you need to start now
  • Short 25-minute blocks for a small task
  • Longer 50- or 90-minute blocks for deeper work
